Shopping
Retail shopping became a linchpin for development in Monroeville when the Miracle Mile, the largest shopping center of its kind between New York and Chicago, opened in 1954. Offering 25 national and specialty retailers in one location, it became the forerunner to other modern shopping complexes. Monroeville Mall came 15 years later, and was considered so vast (1.3 million square feet) and featured such a variety of goods that developers joked they could reside there in an emergency. Those comments inspired famed horror director George Romero to use the mall as a setting for his 1978 zombie movie "Dawn of the Dead." Today, the Monroeville retail district includes these two landmarks as well as specialty and boutique shops of every kind.

If you're looking for a more urban shopping experience, head to downtown Pittsburgh. In the heart of the City are major department stores like Macy's and Sak's along with lots of retailers specializing in everything from jewelry to antiques to party goods and supplies. In addition, Pittsburgh retail hubs like Oxford Center, Fifth Avenue Place, and the Shops at Station Square combine fashion, convenience, and specialty shops with varied dining options from casual to unique.
If a day of antiquing in the country is more your speed, head to the Laurel Highlands where you can enjoy the charms of an old general store; a small family-operated fruit farm; or unique Amish antiques, crafts, and gifts.
