The Laurel Highlands is also home to the Great Allegheny Passage the first trail to be inducted into the "The Rail-Trail Hall of Fame" and the longest multi-purpose rail-trail in the eastern U.S. with 132 continuous, nearly level, miles from near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Cumberland, Maryland. The trail connects to the C&O Canal Towpath in Cumberland, Maryland providing a motor-free route for hiking and cycling from Pittsburgh to the District of Columbia

The Three Rivers Heritage Trail is a wonderful pedestrian trail and greenway system in the Pittsburgh region running for 21 miles along both sides of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio Rivers. It is an almost complete public route for cyclists, walkers, runners, and in some places rollerbladers. And bikes are available for rent right on the trail in two locations from Golden Triangle Bike Rental. Or how about seeing the city from the river - literally. Kayak Pittsburgh offers rentals from May through October every year. Kayaking is easy to learn and great for beginners. No experience is necessary and most folks learn how to manage a kayak in 10 to 15 minutes.
