BE THE ONE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

One in four Americans experience a mental health or addiction disorder each year. The National Council of Behavioral Health (mentalhealthfirstaid.org) is working to train one million Americans to become Mental Health First Aiders.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an 8-hour course that teaches you how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The adult Mental Health First Aid course is appropriate for anyone 18 years and older who wants to learn how to help a person who may be experiencing a mental health related crisis or problem. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, psychosis, and addictions. The training helps you identify, understand and respond to signs of addictions and mental illnesses.

Just as CPR training helps a person with no clinical training assist an individual following a heart attach, Mental Health First Aid training helps a person assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis such as contemplating suicide. In both situations, the goal is to help support an individual until appropriate professional help arrives.

This training is being offered through a partnership between Monroeville Public Library, Monroeville Interfaith Ministerium and Allegheny HealthChoices. The training includes a training manual and lunch.
