Monroeville Public Library is proud to participate in the 2018 One College, One Community Reads! program sponsored by the COmmunity College of Allegheny County. This year’s Community Read title is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Henrietta Lacks was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells — taken without her knowledge in 1951 — became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more.
As we address the themes and issues of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, MPL welcomes Johnathan JeVon White, Instructor in the History Department at Penn State Greater Allegheny, for a presentation and discussion on medical ethics and race in U.S. history. Whether you’ve already read the book or just want to learn more, please join us!
