One College, One Community Reads!
Race and the U.S. Justice System
POSTPONED

Monroeville Public Library is proud to participate in the 2017 One College, One Community Reads! program sponsored by the Community College of Allegheny County. This year’s Community Read title is Ta-Nehisi Coates’s memoir Between the World and Me. Written as a series of letters to his teenaged son, the book describes the evolution of Coates’s thinking on race, from the philosophy of Malcolm X to his conclusion that race itself is a fabrication, elemental to the concept of American (white) exceptionalism.

On March 28 in the Gallery Space, Federal Public Defender Akin Adepoju will lead a discussion about race, policing, prisons, and the U.S. justice system. The discussion will relate broadly to the themes of Between the World and Me. Reading the book is not necessary to attend the discussion, however.
